My husband, John and I have been farming since
2003. We were farming what we knew; Onion, Carrots, Coloured
Carrots, Celery Root and Parsley Root. We started to expand and
dappled with different Cabbages and Globe Artichokes.
We were going to Farmer's Markets in the
summer and bagging onions for some smaller GTA grocery stores in the
winter. In the early winter months of 2006, we were expecting our
2nd child and knew that our hectic lifestyle of summer markets would
take a toll on a newborn baby and on our other son who had just had
his first birthday.
We needed something to keep our small farm
viable. We wanted something that would be sustainable and something
that we would be able to pass on to our children. We also needed
something to do with what we currently already had, a barn and a few
greenhouses.
One day, while we were in the barn bagging
onions, a friend of ours came by and told us about a sprout
operation that was for sale. The timing couldn't have been better.
We put then put all of our energy into producing our sprouts on our
farm. It hasn't been without problems, but on the whole, our sprout
farm has been a perfect fit for our family.
Our customers know what they need to eat to
stay healthy and they also know how important it is to support their
local producers. Our customers appreciate all that we local farmers
do.
